Spirit of Mounts Bay - May 2016

Thursday 2nd June, 2016 - 1:38pm

Glorious weather, a holiday weekend, Cornwall beating Cheshire at Twickenham to retain the County Championship and, on the undercard, an England 3rd XV thrashing the hapless Welsh. Could it get any better? Well the packed audience at St. Mary's Church in Penzance certainly thought so judging from the thunderous ovation they gave Mousehole Male Voice Choir after their concert last Sunday.

The church hosted a celebration of the Spirit of Mounts Bay, with flowers, music and the arts. The concert was in aid of the Penlee Lifeboat Station appeal and the Penlee Cluster youth projects. With both being very close to the choirs heart, the men needed no second invitation to perform. St. Mary's church was adorned with the most beautiful and fragrant floral display as well as some wonderful work from local artists. It is also well known for it's wonderful acoustics and is one of the choirs favourite venues.

The guest artist for the concert was soprano Hannah Pascoe, who delighted the audience with her range and power of singing. Hannah's control and clarity was very impressive, most noticeably when reaching the high notes during her arias. Her rendition of "I Dreamed A Dream" was spellbinding.

Mousehole, under the guidance of MD Stephen Lawry and accompanist Annette Turton, were in magnificent form. Highlights from the concert  were "Wade in the Water" and the ever popular and eternally beautiful "Morte Christe". Maureen Nicholls played the flute perfectly during "Flying Free" and "Riversong" and Dave Evans was in inspired voice for his solo part in "Lean on Me." St. Mary's Church is certainly an inspirational place to sing and it brings out the tight harmonies and balanced singing that Mousehole are known for.

Amongst the audience were people from Brittany, America, Germany and Sweden and along with the locals they enjoyed a choir that is singing to an exceptionally high standard. The choir are entering a very busy June with five concerts to look forward to. This Sunday, June 5th at 7.30p.m. they are singing at St. Agnes Parish Church where their special guests will be the ever popular Twin Harmony. On Sunday, June 12th, it will be the first of the outdoor concerts at Mousehole Harbour, which starts at 7.30p.m. The MidSummer concert at Paul Churh follows on Sunday, June 19th at 7.45p.m. where our guest artist will be soprano Natalie Mayer-Hutchings.

And last, but by no means least, on Friday June 24th at St. Mary's Church, Penzance, we will be singing at the "Cornwall meets California" Golowan 2016 Gala Concert alongside the Sierra Nevada Wind Orchestra. This promises to be a very special evening.
